Lichfield Half Marathon
Sunday 4th May 2014 10:30
The Lichfield Half Marathon will take place on Sunday 4th May 2014 at 10:30am. This is the fourth year it has been staged and the event has quickly built up a reputation among runners that it now attracts in excess of 1500 competitors. It is located in the historic market city of Lichfield, famous for its three spired cathedral and Dr Johnson’s birthplace (author of the first English dictionary). It was also home to Erasmus Darwin, a physician, inventor and poet who postulated theories of evolution which were later taken on by his famous grandson, Charles Darwin. Lichfield retains an unspoilt quality with many listed buildings leaving a Georgian legacy. The city is located 16 miles north of Birmingham and easily accessible via the M6 Toll and A38.
The Lichfield Half Marathon will start from playing fields in front of King Edward VI School, turn left on to the A51 and proceed along Tamworth Road. The route will take runners towards and through Whittington and then on through rural roads past the outskirts of Fradley, before heading back towards Lichfield via Netherstowe and finally ending at Stowe Fields which is situated between Stowe Pool and the Cathedral. The first part of the route (along A51 to Whittington Barracks) will be closed to traffic. The remainder of the route is along quiet country lanes but marshalls will patrol each stage of the route guiding competitors and ensuring traffic is controlled.
The first three runners of the Ladies and Gents races will be presented with trophies. Every finisher will be presented with a medal showing their participation in the Lichfield Half Marathon along with a goody bag containing water, energy bar and a piece of fruit. Refreshment stations will situated at several places around the course. The race will use chip timings.
